How Governments and Tech Companies Are Working to Improve Wellbeing

For a long time, we thought of mental health as a personal battle. If you were stressed, it was up to you to find a way to fix it. If you were addicted to your phone, it was considered a lack of willpower. But as we move through this year, that perspective has shifted completely. We have realized that the world we live in—both the physical one and the digital one—has a massive impact on how we feel.

Fixing the global mental health crisis is a task too large for any one person. This is why we are seeing a historic “big team-up” between governments and tech companies to create a world that supports us rather than drains us.

A New Safety Net for Everyone

The core of this movement is the understanding that our environment shapes our health. Just as governments build roads and provide clean water, they are now beginning to build a digital safety net. Making apps “healthy” is no longer just a nice idea that companies might try if they feel like it; it is becoming the law.

Your phone and your government are finally on the same team. They are working together to ensure that the tools we use every day are designed to protect our peace of mind. This means that mental wellness is being baked into the infrastructure of our society.

New Rules to Protect Your Free Time

One of the biggest changes involves how we spend our time outside of school or work. In many parts of the world, new laws called “The Right to Disconnect” have been passed. These rules mean that you are not required to check work emails or messages once your day is over. It protects your dinner time, your sleep, and your weekends.

Additionally, governments are looking closely at how apps keep us scrolling. They are creating rules to ensure that companies cannot use “tricks”—like endless feeds that never stop—to keep us online when we want to be resting. There are also much stronger protections for children.

New regulations ensure that the internet is a safer, happier place for kids, preventing them from seeing content that makes them feel anxious or less than others.

Tech Companies Becoming Part of the Solution

Tech companies are also stepping up to show they can be part of the healing process. Many platforms now use smart technology to flag “cries for help.” If a user is searching for things that suggest they are in a crisis, the app can instantly connect them to a real doctor or a local help line.

To help users make better choices, we are seeing the rise of a “Nutrition Label” for apps. Just like the label on a box of cereal, this tells you how an app will affect your life—for example, if it will hurt your sleep or help your focus. When looking at popular tools like Headspace vs Calm, users can now see exactly how these apps use their data and how effective they are at lowering stress.

Furthermore, tech giants are sharing anonymized information with scientists. This allows researchers to understand why people are feeling stressed on a global scale, helping us create better solutions for everyone.

Building Healthy Digital Spaces

We are also seeing the creation of “Digital Parks.” These are free, government-sponsored apps where anyone can go to meditate, listen to calming music, or learn about mental health. These spaces are designed to be quiet and free of ads.

Most phones now come with a “Calm Mode” already turned on. This means that out of the box, your device is set to hide distracting alerts and lower blue light at night. Governments and tech companies are also working together to make sure the best mental health tools aren’t just for people with money.

In many places, a doctor can now “prescribe” a premium wellness app, and the national health service will pay for it. This ensures that everyone has access to high-quality care.

Why Happiness Is Good for Everyone

Why are governments so interested in our happiness? It turns out that happy citizens make a stronger nation. When people feel balanced and supported, they are more productive at work, they stay physically healthier, and they contribute more to their communities.

Countries are moving away from just counting money—known as GDP—to measure success. Instead, they are starting to look at “Gross National Happiness.” This means a leader’s success is judged by how well the people feel. To encourage this, governments are giving rewards to tech companies that can prove their apps are actually making people’s lives better.

If an app helps people sleep better or reduces anxiety, that company might get a tax break. This makes “doing good” a smart business move.

A World Designed for You

The ultimate goal of this big team-up is to create a future where help is built into every part of our day. We are moving toward a world where staying well is no longer a difficult task that you have to do alone. It is becoming the easiest choice to make. When the people in charge of the laws and the people in charge of the technology agree that our minds matter, we all win.

We are finally building a world that cares for us by design, ensuring a brighter and more peaceful future for everyone.
