The advent calendars you still have time to shop for this holiday season

Christmas is a special holiday for many people from all over the world, and no small number of people would say that this is by far their favourite time of the year. While for many it holds spiritual significance, for others it is a secular holiday, but nevertheless one that is focused on the beauty and importance of cheer and human connection. People celebrate with decorations, spending time with their families, enjoying traditional Christmas dinner foods (who can say no to Christmas pudding, treacle, pigs in blankets, and mince pies?), and, of course, by giving and receiving gifts.

And while the items you choose to get will naturally depend on the recipient’s interests and hobbies, there are some presents that are universal for everybody, in that everyone will be happy to receive them. One of them is the well-known Advent calendar, the gift that just keeps on giving.

What are Advent calendars?

The Advent calendar is used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas, and despite seeming very modern, it is actually quite an old tradition. Advent calendars date back to the 19th century and were originally used by German Lutherans before moving on to the rest of the world. Back then, families used candles or chalk to count down the days until Christmas, but things changed in 1908 when the first commercial version was released.

Advent calendars evolved to include pictures that could be revealed behind tiny doors. After production was disrupted as a result of the Second World War, Advent calendars were reintroduced and popularised in 1946. From then on, mass production made it possible to spread the tradition across the globe, something that obviously couldn’t have happened with the handmade versions.

For skincare lovers

Skincare has become increasingly popular among the general public over the last few years, and many people are always looking for ways to improve their routines to ensure they have a natural glow at all times. If you want to make sure you get something that they’re guaranteed to enjoy look for an advent calendar with little samples that include a varied list of products such as sheet masks, face creams, serums, cleansers, and, if you’re aware of their particular skin concerns, you can also look into skincare that deals with irritation or which can keep breakouts under control.

Bath and body advent calendars include body lotions, bath bombs, scented shower gels, cleaning brushes, hair gel, and microfibre cloths. For those who are more focused on beauty, there’s the option to get advent calendars that include makeup and perfume. Getting the opportunity to sample a different scent, tinted lip balm, mini lipstick, or volumising mascara on a daily basis will definitely feel like the perfect holiday pampering for many.

For the food lovers

Christmastime is when people are delighted by many different culinary treats. So, an Advent calendar that includes tasty snacks will certainly be the ideal present for many. Condiments are the most obvious choice for a calendar, but make sure it’s something special that can’t be eaten on a daily basis. Some of the options you can bet on include mustard ketchup, tomato and chilli chutneys, horseradish creams, fig relishes, apricot and ginger chutneys, caramelised onion marmalade, and tomato ketchup made from actual tomato puree.

There are Advent calendars out there that offer a selection of instant mash options, like butter and herbs or bacon and cheese. For those who have a sweet tooth, the chocolate Advent calendars are a well-known classic, but you can change things up a little by going for something a little different. Boiled sweets and gummies can actually make a stronger impression as they come in more flavours and provide more diversity. From watermelon and sour apple to candied orange peel and Eton mess, there’s something for every palate in a calendar like this.

A nice drink

As the weather gets colder, there’s nothing quite like relaxing with a warm beverage and a good book. Or your favourite series. Or by cuddling your cat and dog. Or by spending some quality time with your children. A few days of organic herbal teas can save you from the excess that happens around Christmas. A relaxing mug of chamomile and lavender, or something a bit more refreshing like fennel and cardamom, can become your new favourites. For those who prefer coffee instead, the best option is the calendars that offer blends from all over the world.

Sampling coffee from Mexico, then moving on to Peru, India, and Vietnam, will feel like taking a journey even when you’re still home. Matcha is a fad for many, but in the case of those who actually enjoy it, there’s nothing quite like it. Apart from the original matcha, those who enjoy the drink can also sample teas that are flavoured with lemon, lavender, or brown sugar.

Getting a new hobby

Getting new stationery is a surprisingly popular hobby, and the odds of knowing somebody who loves writing materials are quite high. From notebooks to pens, sticky notes, washi tape, and stamp kits, there are so many items to enjoy that it might end up feeling like a bit too much. Many people have begun getting into embroidery or knitting over the last few years, a perfect hobby for the winter months, as it takes attention and can help you design your own warming knitwear. Apart from providing you with the supplies you need to get started on a few small projects, how-to pamphlets are included as well, so that you don’t feel intimidated to get started.

Finding the perfect calendar is not difficult at all. Everything you need to know is what the person you’re getting it for is passionate about, and you’re ready to go. There are so many different options out there that you’re guaranteed to find something that is perfect for them. The only thing you should remember is that you shouldn’t rush. You want to make sure that what you get is perfect and the type of present that will make them happy over the long term.
